On August 13th, Prof. FAN Shicai, Director of the Department of Orthopedic Trauma of Southern Medical University Third Hospital, together with his team, conducted a high-level Sino-German exchange on trauma surgery online with Prof. Lehmann, the Director of the Department of Trauma Surgery, Orthopedics and Plastic Surgery at the University Medical Center G?ttingen in Germany and the President-elect of the German Society for Trauma Surgery (DGU) 2027. The webinar was moderated by Dr. YANG Cheng, Associate Chief Physician of the Department of Orthopedic Trauma of Southern Medical University Third Hospital, and Prof. FAN Shicai delivered a welcome speech. Prof. Lehmann is a leading figure in the field of trauma surgery in Europe. With the topic of "Stabilization of the Posterior Pelvic Ring", he systematically analyzed the patterns of posterior pelvic ring injuries and different management strategies with a large number of cases and international published data. This not only demonstrated his team's rich clinical experience and exquisite surgical skills but also provided valuable experience for the Chinese colleagues. In the discussion session, both parties not only acknowledged each other's top expertise but also shared different clinical observations and ideas. During the exchange, Prof. FAN Shicai put forward his observations and thoughts on the different research results obtained by the two teams in the same research question. The two parties agreed to further verify and discuss the research conclusions by exchanging published data. He also had in-depth discussions with Prof. Lehmann on the differences in the outcomes of some fixation methods in different patient groups based on his clinical experience. Subsequently, Prof. FAN Shicai gave a talk on the theme of "Application of Lateral Rectus Abdominis Approach(LRA) in Pelvic and Acetabular Fractures". This innovative surgical approach was independently developed by him and his team in 2010. Over the past decade, it has been widely used in major hospitals in China. The team performed about 300 surgeries with the approached each year, covering complex cases in elderly patients and children, all achieving good outcomes. The 17 typical cases he presented were impressive in terms of both reduction effect and long-term functional recovery. Prof. Lehmann showed a strong interest in this surgical concept and results, and highly acknowledged its innovativeness and clinical value. This webinar was not only an academic exchange but also a true meeting of ideas and experiences. The Southern Medical University Third Hospital, and the University Medical Center G?ttingen will work more closely together on advanced techniques such as pelvic and acetabular fracture treatment, robot-assisted surgery, and navigated screw placement. Dr. Yang will soon conclude his six-month fellowship with Professor Lehmann’s team at this world-class center, bringing back the latest concepts and techniques to benefit more patients in China. Both sides see this exchange as a chance to complement each other's advantages and explore together, so that more patients can benefit from the expertise and cooperation achievements.
